Goodreads summary:

When Nala Robertson reluctantly agrees to attend an open mic night for her cousin-sister-friend Imani’s birthday, she finds herself falling in instant love with Tye Brown, the MC. He’s perfect, except . . . Tye is an activist and is spending the summer putting on events for the community when Nala would rather watch movies and try out the new seasonal flavors at the local creamery. In order to impress Tye, Nala tells a few tiny lies to have enough in common with him. As they spend more time together, sharing more of themselves, some of those lies get harder to keep up. As Nala falls deeper into keeping up her lies and into love, she’ll learn all the ways love is hard, and how self-love is revolutionary.

In Love Is a Revolution, plus size girls are beautiful and get the attention of the hot guys, the popular girl clique is not shallow but has strong convictions and substance, and the ultimate love story is not only about romance but about how to show radical love to the people in your life, including to yourself.

I wish I had read this book earlier. I love Nala. Nala is me when I finished high school. Nala has got insecurities about what others think of her body size, what hairstyle to rock, which outfit to put on a summer afternoon. She thinks little of herself, loses her way and pretends to be someone else to be loved. I loved Nala. I loved her lists of different things. I loved her way of finding herself and loving herself. I loved her love for Tye. I loved her choice of music.

This book tackles many topics like saving the environment, fighting for justice, knowing your roots, loving your family, and knowing what’s best for yourself. What I liked most in this book is how the author illustrates the different views of young adults on such matters. There are those who know everything that’s happening and want to react; they are those who don’t want to react and there are those who don’t really care. Just give them their peace and let them be.

This is a good book that I will definitely put on my highly recommended list of books. Things to expect from the book include different hairstyles, 9 steps of doing natural make-up, embarrassing places to not cry to and ideas on gifts to give your girlfriend.
